My hand, eyes & brain do all the work as much as any Caricature artist does. My PC is strictly nothing more than a tool. I hold a special plastic pen in my hand, physically draw on the laptop screen & print the drawings on a high-quality printer. This YouTube link shows exactly how I work.

(DATE) (Port Washington, NY) – On Saturday and Sunday, May 2 and 3, 2009 more than 2000 animal shelters worldwide will join North Shore Animal League America in Pet Adoptathon 2009, helping to save the lives of homeless pets. Renowned dog expert Cesar Millan, serves as spokesperson, for the 15th annual global adoption extravaganza, sponsored by Nestle Purina PetCare Company and will take part in activities at the Pet Adoptathon headquarters in Port Washington, NY during the weekend.

Beginning at 9 AM on Saturday, May 2, shelters in every time zone will open their doors for the 36-hour adoption event. This year’s Pet Adoptathon will celebrate 2009 as the Year of Mutt-i-grees™, an initiative of The American Mutt-i-grees Club (AMC) The AMC encourages animal lovers world wide to adopt of mixed breed shelter dogs as a way of taking a stand against inhumane puppy mills and helping to curb the rate of euthanasia of healthy adoptable shelter animals due to lack of space.

On Saturday, May 2, 2009 at Pet Adoptathon national headquarters, North Shore Animal League America will hold opening ceremonies, featuring Millan. The star of National Geographic Channel’s, “Dog Whisperer,” Millan recently created “Sessions with Cesar”, a successful online training course for dog owners. In partnership with North Shore Animal League America, the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization, he is also developing a 3-step “Shelter & Rescue Sessions” training program to benefit the more than 2000 Pet Adoptathon 2009shelter and rescue partners. “Shelter & Rescue Sessions” will address relinquishments, in-shelter behavior problems (to enhance adoptability of pets) and give shelters and rescues an effective post-adoption tool to minimize return rates. Cesar and Ilusion Millan have also created a foundation to help support the shelter and rescue community.

Over the course of Pet Adoptathon Weekend Animal League adopters, will have over 700 puppies, kittens, dogs and cats to choose from at the Port Washington shelter. In addition to Cesar Millan’s appearances, the 36 hour marathon event will feature family-style entertainment under a big tent, including performances both days by the Purina Incredible Dog Team, refreshments, raffles, a caricaturist (Dale Gladstone), a pet psychic and spring plant sales. Experts in training, veterinary care and grooming will be on hand both days to offer tips and advice.

In 1995, Pet Adoptathon began as a North Shore Animal League adoption weekend, with the goal of finding homes for each and every dog and cat at the Animal League. That weekend, over 500 needy pets found loving homes. Encouraged by the success, the Animal League went on to invite shelters world-wide to participate in Pet Adoptathon. Last year, over 2,000 shelters participated, including organizations in all fifty states and over 23 countries world-wide, with at least one shelter in each time zone. To date, Pet Adoptathon has fostered over 250,000 loving adoptions world-wide.

A year or so ago, I was hired to draw caricatures during a segment of the Tyra Banks show. That day, they ran way behind schedule & were not able to use me. Fortunately, they had no difficulty paying me for the 2 or 3 hours I spent waiting for them not drawing caricatures. Meanwhile, I had an amusing little experience:

Waiting for Tyra's people to show, I sat at the specified rendezvous point, Columbus Circle. An older couple sat next to me and saw my plastic "Caricatures by Dale Gladstone" sign (I wanted to make sure Tyra's people would find me). The gentleman said to his wife, "Well, here we are in Columbus Circle, and here's Dale Gladstone." I said hi & shook his hand. He told me they were from LA so I mentioned how one of my pals out there is Bryan (Usual Suspects, X-Men, Superman Returns & Valkyrie) Singer. He asked me if I knew who Glenn Ford was. I said sure & he introduced himself as Peter Ford, Glenn's son. He mentioned how Warner Bros. contacted him for an old photo of his Dad to put on Eva Marie Saint's mantle in the Kent farmhouse in Superman Returns. Some of you might recall GF played Clark Kent's adoptive Dad in the 1st Chris Reeve Superman flick. PF & I had a nice chat about old movies & the book he wrote.

Caricature art from photos prices

Q) "How much do you charge for your caricature art from photos?"
A) What I charge depends on a few things;
-1) What, in detail, will my caricatures be used for?
-2) What, in detail, must be shown in the caricatures ? (the # of people you want in the caricature drawing is one of the crucial factors influencing the price I can quote.)
-3) How soon can you get photos to me & how soon do you need this done? (How soon does your printer need my art to meet your deadline?)
-4) Please visit my caricature website . What samples are like what you want? The art you see on my Caricature page is more expensive than the art you see on my Party Caricatures page. Please put in writing any details I must include in the caricature. Also put in writing anything I must not include. The reason for this instruction is best explained by the following story:
Once I was asked to do a marker drawing of a man at his desk. No instructions were given regarding his attire, so I drew him in a jacket & tie. When the client saw this, they said, "Oh no, he musn't be dressed that way, no jacket & tie..." With a mar ker drawing, the only way to fix this would be to put him in a black turtleneck or do the whole drawing over again. They didn't want a black turtleneck. They finally understood why I had to charge them for 2 drawings to give them what they did want, but I wish to avoid such unhappy situations in the future. That's why I always ask clients to put their do's & don'ts in writing. Not all changes require a double fee. Some are even free. I only charge for needed changes that are not my fault. How much I charge depends on how much work is required & how much time is left to do it.

"Q-how many pics will you need?"

A- I recommend sending as many snapshots as possible and allowing me to choose what is the best reference. Of course, I'll listen to your suggestions in that regard. If you only send me the one photo you think is best, it may show a nice smile, but something like dark hair might be lost in a dark background or something. The worst photo you have with a person's eyes closed or glowing red might be the only shot where I can see what their hair or chin looks like. Another photo where they might have a big coffee mug in front of their face might be the only shot showing their eye color... so send me lots of photos so I can get all the visual reference I need to render a good likeness.
